Bob Weir, Billie Eilish and Finneas Prepare for Farm Sanctuary Live Stream

Bob Weir, Billie Eilish, Finneas and Joaquin Phoenix are among the artists and actors participating in Farm Sanctuary’s 35th anniversary free livestream, The Power of Sanctuary, airs today at 7 p.m. EST via the organization’s website.

Ellen Degeneres, Alec Baldwin, Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, Alicia Silverstone, Edie Falco and many more will also appear on the live broadcast celebrating the nation’s premier farm animal sanctuary and advocacy organization.

“Founded in 1986, Farm Sanctuary combats the disastrous effects of animal farming on animals, the environment, social justice and public health through rescue, education and advocacy,” says the nonprofit organization in its mission statement. “The organization provides lifelong care to animals rescued from abuse at sanctuaries in New York and California; promotes a fair and compassionate vegan life; and advocates for legal and political reforms.

As part of the live stream of The Power of Sanctuary, Weir will meet with Farm Sanctuary co-founder, Gene Baur, to discuss veganism and how the Grateful Dead played a role in the creation of the group at Goal. non-profit.

“The Grateful Dead and the community around it helped inspire Farm Sanctuary and helped us build an organization,” Baur told Weir. “We go to the Grateful Dead shows in the 1980s, selling vegan hot dogs in our Volkswagen van with information on factory farming. It was a very open-minded crowd… I really enjoyed the messages of peace, love, unity, belonging, kindness, compassion that surrounded the Grateful Dead. It created this huge positivity.

The old hippie ideal: “If it feels good, do it. If that sounds right, that’s what I think people were really trying to achieve, ”Weir says. “If that’s okay with you, do it. And kindness is extremely important, and it was very clear to us that kindness was going to be an important element. We managed to make this clearly understood to all those who wanted to watch us or listen to us. “

Weir, now a longtime vegetarian, later adds, “There was a time when this Jerry [Garcia] and I both went vegetarian for a few years. And, after about three weeks of being a vegetarian, a peace comes over me and it’s subtle, but it’s there. Believe me, there it is. I don’t miss meat at all. It is possible to change your tastes, what you are looking for in flavors in nutrition. And it works for me.

Eilish, a vegan since the age of 12, recently relied on her animal activism to force Oscar de la Renta to stop using fur in their products; in exchange, she wore the label’s dress to the Met Gala.
