GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) – A donation box meant to help feed and care for animals at a Georgetown animal shelter was stolen days before Christmas.

There are over 60 donation boxes placed throughout Georgetown County year round and can bring in up to $ 18,000 per year at the animal shelter.

But even the theft of a box has an impact on the centre’s ability to care for its 200+ animals.

“They’ve endured enough. The little assistance and sometimes the astronomical assistance they get is what they need, so seeing someone take it out is pretty disheartening, ”said Shallon McConnell, director of the shelter at St. Frances.

Donation boxes are emptied monthly and some can hold up to $ 100. That $ 100 can help feed several of their animals for days. The money is also used for medical needs and to keep the center open.

“The more we harvest from these boxes, the more we can provide, we can provide this special care, we can do this animal for this special surgery, go beyond those boxes and someone took it from us,” he said. said St. Frances General Manager Suzanne Roman.

Roman added that since people learned of the theft from the donation box, the community has mobilized to donate what the shelter has lost.

Anyone wishing to help the shelter can donate online.

Georgetown Police are also asking people to contact them if they can identify the man wanted for questioning. You are invited to call 843-545-4300.
