“In times like these when the weather is very cold, it is bitter for you and me and for these animals. It is even worse, especially when they are in unfamiliar territories or environments or even more when they do not have access to regular food in a shelter, to fresh water, ”said Terri. Woo, Furry Friends Rockin Rescue Volunteer.
These cool shepherd mixes are three of four siblings who were rescued over the weekend after they were spotted living under an abandoned trailer on the south side of Bismarck.
“He was worried at the time because he hadn’t seen the puppy for a few days. He assumed the other puppy hadn’t survived when the initial cold front appeared, or that something had happened to him, ”Woo said.
On Saturday, the fourth puppy was spotted and then examined for his condition.
“Right away, we assessed the puppy and observed him to see if he could take liquids or if he was interested in food. She was able to consume a little, but she couldn’t keep it, ”Woo said.
Volunteers later found out that the puppy had tested positive for parvo, a disease that affects the dog’s intestines and causes dehydration.
“This morning they contacted us saying that she was still very, very weak. His blood tests were not normal. We have since given permission to try a plasma infusion in the hopes that it will rejuvenate his system, ”Woo said.
The other three siblings, one brother and two sisters are looked after by an adoptive parent in Mandan.
“Just home is probably the starting point and obviously a big heart to bring them into your house and obviously to let them go too because you fall in love with them,” said foster parent Sara Rinas.
When asked how they were doing without their other siblings, Rinas said, “They seem to be doing pretty well, but you can totally tell they’re attached to the three we have here. I’m sure they probably miss her, it would be nice if we could get them together.
