Report Highlights

Pilgrim [NASDAQ: PPC], a leading global food company, today announced the release of its 2021 Sustainability Report, which includes updates on progress towards the organization’s 2030 goals announced last year. The report details the company’s progress in critical areas – team members, the environment, communities, animal care, customers and consumers and suppliers – across its operations in United States, United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Mexico.

As Pilgrim’s continues to strengthen its approach to sustainability and ESG, the company completed its first sustainability bond audit, resulting in positive progress towards the commitment to reduce 30% intensity of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The new ESG Pilgrim’s Pride Committee of the Pilgrim’s Board of Directors was also created, which was tasked with overseeing areas such as climate change, human rights, diversity and inclusion, and employee health, safety and well-being to ensure excellence, humanity and corporate responsibility are fully integrated into all levels of the organization.

“At Pilgrim’s, we recognize our role as a global food company and a major employer in the regions where we operate,” said Fabio Sandri, CEO of Pilgrim’s. “We strive to leverage our scale and influence to help food and agriculture be part of the solution to many of the sustainability challenges we face around the world.”

Key achievements detailed in the 2021 report include:

  • Members of the team:
    • Expanding our Better Futures program across the United States, which provides tuition-free community college for our team members and their dependents – with over 370 enrolled participants and two graduates to date
    • 39% improvement in global safety index since 2019, exceeding our target of 30%
  • Environment:
    • Reduced Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 10% from our 2019 baseline
    • Invested over $18.7 million in more than 64 greenhouse gas emission reduction projects at Pilgrim facilities
  • Animal Care:
    • Launch of our Global Animal Welfare Dashboard, created by Pilgrim’s animal welfare teams using a combination of indicators selected for their importance to the health and welfare of our animals
  • Communities:
    • Completing over 100 infrastructure and social service projects across the United States through our $15 million Pilgrim’s Hometown Strong initiative
  • Suppliers:
    • Partnership with over 6,000 livestock and poultry producing partners, delivering payments of over $2.2 billion

“We are investing in sustainability and ESG initiatives across our organization like never before, and I am confident that we will continue to move ourselves and the industry forward in meaningful ways, Sandri said. “Our vision – to be the best and most respected company in our industry, creating the opportunity for a brighter future for our team members – will continue to guide us as we move forward on this journey.”
